You’re Invited to Fireworks at Commission Church

It’s been three years since our last fireworks show at Commission Church, and we’re excited to bring everyone back together for another summer evening of fun and fellowship.

One of my favorite memories from our last fireworks show happened before the fireworks even started.

As part of the pre-show fun, a firework launched a cork attached to a parachute high into the sky. Instantly, a handful of kids took off running underneath it, eyes fixed on the parachute as it floated back toward the ground. Everyone wanted to be the one to catch it.

That night, my younger brother was the lucky one.

It wasn’t really about the cork.

It was about watching children laugh together, make memories together, and simply enjoy being surrounded by other people who love Jesus.

These moments matter.

They remind kids that church is more than a place they attend on Sundays. It’s a family. It is God’s family. Experiences like these create memories that last for years and help build a lifelong love for the fellowship of believers. They show children that they belong to a church full of people who know them, care for them, and are glad they’re here.

That’s why we’re excited to gather again.

Sign up to serve Last year, several of us helped out with the KC Day of Hope in 2025. We would love even more of us to join in the effort to bring hope to some of the people in Kansas City this coming September, on September 19th. Dozens of churches and non-profits are partnering together in collaboration with Convoy of Hope to give the residents of Kansas City a glimmer of hope in a dark world. We're going to be offering a kid zone with inflatables, a prayer tent, free haircuts and family portraits, community resources, food distribution, clothing distribution, and other activities for the Kansas City area. (NLT) At Commission Church, we believe children are capable of knowing God’s Word deeply, not just hearing Bible stories occasionally. That’s why we are excited to relaunch Junior Bible Quiz (JBQ) during our Sunday morning Discipleship Hour at 9 AM! This gives you an opportunity to bring your kids to church while you attend our discipleship class in the sanctuary. JBQ is designed for children ages 4 through 5th grade and is one of the most effective discipleship tools for helping kids memorize Scripture, understand biblical truths, and develop a lifelong love for the Bible. Hiding God’s Word in our hearts is one of the greatest gifts I was given as a child. From a young age, I knew God’s truth, and it formed and guided my life. JBQ is a gift to our children. We will be starting Junior Bible Quiz for the fall of 2026 on Sunday, August 9th at 9 am in the classroom What is Junior Bible Quiz? Junior Bible Quiz is a fun, engaging, and scripture-centered discipleship ministry that helps children learn and retain God’s Word through: Bible memorization Interactive questions and answers Team participation Friendly competition Foundational doctrine and theology Weekly discipleship and encouragement Kids are challenged to grow in their understanding of scripture while building confidence, friendships, and a deeper relationship with Jesus. During the school year, our JBQ teams also compete one Saturday morning each month against other churches in exciting quiz competitions. These events give kids the opportunity to work together, apply what they’ve learned, build friendships, and grow in confidence while having an incredible amount of fun. Every child participating in JBQ will receive a binder containing all of the official JBQ questions and material. This binder will serve as their primary study tool throughout the year as they memorize scripture and grow in biblical understanding. JBQ is only as successful as the families make it. While we are committed to investing in children each Sunday morning, one hour of practice, teaching, and training is not enough to truly hide the Word of God in our kids’ hearts. JBQ is a discipleship tool, and real spiritual formation happens when families intentionally engage with scripture throughout the week. As parents practice verses, review questions, and encourage consistency at home, children begin building lifelong foundations in God’s Word. We do not simply want children to attend church. We want them to know the Bible, recognize the voice of God, and build their lives on truth. In a world constantly trying to shape our children, we believe we must actively work to form them through the Word of God. Sign up for GriefShare GriefShare | Find Hope in the Midst of Grief You don't have to walk through grief alone. Grief is one of the hardest journeys we'll ever face. Whether you've lost a spouse, parent, child, sibling, family member, or close friend, grief has a way of affecting every part of life. Some days the weight feels overwhelming. Other days you wonder why everyone else seems to have moved on while you're still carrying the loss. Grief can leave us asking difficult questions. Is what I'm feeling normal? Will life ever feel whole again? Where is God in the middle of my pain? If you've asked those questions, you're not alone. At Commission Church, we believe God never intended for us to carry our burdens by ourselves. One of the ways we experience His comfort is through the encouragement, support, and presence of other believers. GriefShare exists to provide a safe place where you can process your grief, learn healthy ways to navigate loss, and discover the hope that Jesus offers, even in life's darkest seasons. What is GriefShare? GriefShare is a 13-week, Christ-centered grief support group for adults who have experienced the death of someone they love. Each weekly meeting combines biblical teaching, practical guidance, and meaningful discussion with others who understand what you're experiencing. Every session is designed to help you process grief honestly while pointing you toward the hope found in Christ. One of the unique features of GriefShare is that each session is self-contained. If you miss a week or join after the group has already begun, you can still participate without feeling behind. Whether your loss happened recently or many years ago, you are welcome. What You Can Expect Each Monday evening you'll experience: Biblical encouragement rooted in God's Word. Video teaching from trusted grief counselors and pastors. Honest discussion with others walking through similar experiences. Practical tools for navigating grief in everyday life. A compassionate, confidential environment where you can share as much or as little as you're comfortable with. Light snacks and refreshments. You won't be pressured to speak, and you won't be expected to have everything figured out. Simply come as you are. Topics We'll Explore Together Throughout the 13 weeks, we'll walk through subjects including: Week 1: Is This Normal? Week 2: Your Grief Journey Week 3: Loneliness & Sadness Week 4: Self-Care Week 5: Fearful & Overwhelmed Week 6: Anger Week 7: Regrets Week 8: Grief & Your Household Week 9: Grief & Your Friendships Week 10: Questions for God Week 11: Stuck in Grief Week 12: Hope & Resilience Week 13: What Do I Live For Now? These conversations address many of the emotions and challenges that often accompany grief while continually pointing participants toward the hope of the gospel. While the workbook is highly recommended, it is not required to participate. Frequently Asked Questions Is this only for people who recently experienced a loss? No. Many people attend months or even years after losing someone they love. Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and healing often begins whenever we're ready to take the next step. What if I don't know anyone? Many participants attend their first meeting without knowing anyone else. GriefShare is designed to help you connect with others who understand the unique challenges of loss. Do I have to share my story? No. You're welcome to participate at whatever level feels comfortable. Some people talk during the first meeting, while others simply listen until they're ready. What if I miss a week? Prayer Service and Youth Time Change
TLDR Commission Youth and our Midweek Prayer Gathering now both meet starting at 6:30pm. We’re moving to a later time to better serve working individuals, families, and parents dropping off students for youth. Our prayer gathering is becoming a more structured and interactive experience with guided prayer, worship, and community connection. Midweek Is Changing at Commission Church Starting next Wednesday, both Commission Youth and our Midweek Prayer Gathering will meet from 6:30. For a while now, we’ve recognized that our previous 5:30pm start time created challenges for many families and working individuals trying to get across the city after work, school, practices, and dinner. We want midweek ministry to be accessible, life-giving, and realistic for the people we’re trying to serve. This adjustment creates space for more people to participate in both youth ministry and prayer together. A Better Rhythm for Families Commission Youth will continue meeting every Wednesday night, but now with an earlier start time. At the same time, we are intentionally relaunching and reshaping our Midweek Prayer Gathering into a more structured and meaningful experience. For many parents, Wednesday nights often become a drop-off and pick-up routine or a waiting period filled with unstructured dead time. We want to create an opportunity for those moments to become spiritually meaningful, too. Instead of simply waiting, parents and adults can now gather together for prayer, connection, worship, and encouragement while students are in youth service. Why Prayer Matters + A Real Story One of the things we love about prayer gatherings is how they connect real life to real faith. Alison S. is a great example of this. Many times, she has come into prayer carrying burdens from conversations she had with coworkers earlier that same day. Her coworkers know she belongs to a praying community. They know there are people who will stand with them in prayer. Many times a month, she comes with their requests because she has built a reputation for caring for her co-workers. That’s the kind of culture we want to continue building at Commission Church. A place where people know they are not alone. A place where burdens are shared. A place where faith becomes active in everyday life. What to Expect Our new Midweek Prayer Gathering will include rotating practices: Guided prayer moments Small group prayer opportunities Worshipful prayer environments Intentional time praying for needs in our congregation, city, schools, workplaces, and families Space to connect relationally with others Whether you feel confident praying out loud or you are brand new to prayer gatherings, this environment is for you. Be a Light in the Darkness 6.6.26 OutreachSign up here As the World Cup approaches, our city will experience an influx of visitors from around the world. While major events bring excitement and opportunity, they also bring increased risks for human trafficking and exploitation, especially among vulnerable children and teenagers. As followers of Jesus, we cannot ignore the darkness around us. We are called to be a light in the darkness and to help set the captive free. On June 6, 2026, churches and believers from across the Kansas City area will mobilize together for a CAN outreach focused on awareness, prayer, and practical action. Teams will then go together into the community to connect with hotel clerks, truck stops, and other key locations where trafficking risks may increase during major events. Earlier this year, during a similar outreach, 10 of the 18 children featured on missing posters connected to the effort were found. Stories like these remind us that awareness matters, prayer matters, and people willing to go make a difference. We believe the Church should not retreat from darkness. We believe we are called into it, carrying the hope, love, and freedom of Jesus. The outreach will mobilize from Central Assembly in Independence, Missouri, and we would love for you to join us.
