Why God Says No to Sex Before Marriage | Dr. Fel Bagunu | Song of Solomon 4:1–5:1

❤️ WHAT IF GOD’S BOUNDARIES FOR SEX AREN’T ABOUT RESTRICTING JOY, BUT PROTECTING SOMETHING SACRED?

Our culture has plenty to say about sex, relationships, consent, pleasure, and personal freedom. But what does the Bible actually say, and why does God reserve sexual intimacy for marriage?

In this candid message from our Song of Solomon series, Dr. Fel Bagunu explores God’s design for sex, intimacy, marriage, and covenant. Rather than presenting sexuality as dirty or shameful, Song of Solomon gives us a remarkably positive picture: sex is God’s idea, intimacy is valuable, and within the covenant of marriage it becomes a sacred celebration.

📖 Main Scripture: Song of Solomon 4:1–5:1

🔥 The Big Idea:
God is not a cosmic killjoy trying to keep us from pleasure. He is its architect.

When intimacy is experienced within the covenant of marriage, it is elevated from a casual transaction into something marked by trust, safety, commitment, vulnerability, and joy.

✨ In this message:
• Why Christians believe sex belongs within marriage
• How biblical sexuality differs from modern sexual ethics
• Why true intimacy begins with honor, not physical attraction
• What Song of Solomon’s “locked garden” teaches about boundaries

💬 Affirmation Before Anatomy

Before the couple’s physical union, Song of Solomon gives us a flood of affirmation. The groom establishes his bride’s dignity, identity, and worth before asking for physical vulnerability.

True intimacy doesn’t begin in the bedroom. It begins in the way we honor one another every day.

🌿 The Locked Garden

Song of Solomon describes the bride as a “garden locked” and a “fountain sealed.”

God’s boundaries aren’t a prison. They’re a shield.

Marriage creates a covenant where two people can give themselves to one another with commitment and security. God’s design isn’t intended to make intimacy less beautiful. It’s intended to protect its beauty.

🙏 And what if you’ve already crossed those boundaries?

This message isn’t a call to live in shame.

The Gospel means your past does not have to dictate your future. Through Jesus, there is forgiveness, cleansing, grace, and the opportunity for a brand-new beginning.

God’s way forward begins with a simple act of surrender: “God, Your way is better than my way.”

Membership Class October 2026
Membership Class: Find Your Place at Commission Church If you’re new to Commission Church and have decided that this is a church community you want to be part of, Membership Class is your next step. Membership is more than having your name on a list. It is a commitment to a local church community, its mission, and the people God has placed around you. Over three Sunday mornings, we’ll talk about who Commission Church is, what we believe, where we’re going, and what it means to belong here. TLDR Membership Class meets October 4, 11, and 18 from 9:00–9:45 a.m. Plan to attend all three classes. This class is for those who are new to Commission Church or want to learn more about committing to our church community and mission. New members will be introduced and celebrated during Worship on Sunday, October 25.SIGN UP FOR MEMBERSHIP CLASS What Is Membership at Commission Church? We believe following Jesus was never meant to be done alone or outside the local church! The local church gives us a community where we can worship together, grow as disciples, serve one another, and participate together in the mission Jesus has given his Church. At Commission Church, our mission is to commission and mobilize passionate followers of Jesus to encounter God, connect with others, and impact our world. Membership is one way of saying, “This is MY church community, and I am committed to participating in our shared mission.” If you’ve been attending Commission Church, getting connected, and believe God may be leading you to make Commission your church home, we’d love for you to join us. What We’ll Cover Our Membership Class takes place over three Sunday mornings, giving us time to talk through several important parts of who we are. Our History: Learn where Commission Church came from and the story God has been writing through our church. Our Mission: Discover why Commission Church exists and how our mission shapes what we do as a church. Our Beliefs: We’ll walk through the core biblical beliefs that define our church, including some of our Assemblies of God and Pentecostal heritage. Our Commitments: Membership means more than attending on Sundays. We’ll talk about what it looks like to commit to one another and participate in Commission Church's life and mission. The Benefits of Membership: We’ll explain what it means to formally belong to Commission Church and the opportunities and benefits that come with membership. Ask yourself: Do I consider Commission Church my church home, or am I moving in that direction? Am I ready to move from simply attending to actively belonging and participating? Do I want to better understand Commission Church’s beliefs, mission, and direction? Do I want to use my gifts, time, and resources alongside others to help accomplish what God has called our church to do? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class is for you! You don’t need to know everything about Commission Church before signing up. That’s part of why the class exists. Come ready to learn, ask questions, and prayerfully consider what it means to call Commission Church your church. What is required to become a Member of Commission Church? A profession of faith in the Lordship of Jesus Christ Participation in the Christian faith evidenced by water baptism Completion of the membership class Completion of the membership covenant and spiritual gifts test 🎉 Celebrating Our New Members Membership isn’t something we want to complete quietly behind the scenes. On Sunday, October 25, we’ll take a portion of our 10:15 a.m. Worship Service to introduce and celebrate our new members as a church family. TLDR 🎃 Free Trunk or Treat: Saturday, October 31 from 4-6pm at Commission Church in South Kansas City. 🍬 Bring the kids: Come in costume and enjoy decorated trunks, plenty of candy, and family-friendly Halloween fun. ❤️ Everyone is invited: You don’t have to attend Commission Church. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors! 🎃 The Details Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026 Time: 4-6pm Location: Commission Church Address: 11801 E Bannister Rd, Kansas City, MO 64138 Cost: FREE! Come dressed in your favorite costume, bring something to collect your candy in, and make your way through our parking lot of decorated trunks. Fall Semester Guide
All the things you need to know for the fall semester at Commission Youth. How to access our calendar: On our main youth page (commissionchurchkc.com/youth), you'll find a calendar with all our youth events and details for each one. That calendar is the best place to find information about our weekly Commission Youth service and any extra activities and events that we are planning to have. Some events may have a post connected to them which provides even more detailed information about the event itself. Big events like Youth Camp and Youth Convention will always have a corresponding post providing all the essential information. Links to those posts will be found in the event description or directly in the post hub of our website. Messages this Fall: This fall, we will focus each Wednesday largely on the Gospels and stories of Jesus. We will learn lessons from many of Jesus' encounters with people throughout his earthly ministry. The Message titles will be listed for each week in our calendar! When you pick up your student, feel free to ask them what they learned about Jesus that night! ⚾ Take Me Out to the Ball Game! Commission Youth is headed to The K! On Wednesday, September 23, instead of our regular Wednesday night youth service, we’re going to watch the Kansas City Royals take on the Chicago White Sox! 🎟️ Tickets We have 12 free tickets available for Commission Youth students. Tickets will be claimed on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up as soon as possible if you want to join us![CLAIM YOUR TICKET] Once all 12 tickets have been claimed, students are still welcome to attend by purchasing their own ticket. However, we cannot guarantee that additional tickets will be located near our group. 🚗 Getting to The K We will carpool together from Commission Church. Meet at: Commission Church Departure: 6:00 PM SHARP Please arrive early enough to get checked in and ready to leave. Our vehicles will leave promptly at 6:00 PM. 🍔 Food Please eat dinner before you arrive or bring money to purchase food and drinks at the stadium. Food is not included with your ticket. 🚙 Returning Home We will return to Commission Church after the game. Because the exact end time of a baseball game can vary, parents will receive an update when we are leaving Kauffman Stadium with our estimated arrival time back at the church. ⚾ See you at the game! There will be no regular Commission Youth service at the church on September 23. TLDR 📅 Date: Wednesday, October 14 🕡 Time: 6:30–8:00 p.m. 📍 Location: Commission Church 🌭 Food: Hot dogs & s'mores provided 👕 What to Bring: A hoodie or jacket for the cool weather and a friend Commission Youth Bonfire 🔥 Fall nights are better around a fire! Join us for a fall Commission Youth Bonfire on Wednesday, October 14th. We'll spend the evening gathered around the bonfire with friends, great conversations, and our regular Commission Youth service. Whether you've been coming to youth for years or this is your first Wednesday, this is a great night to invite a friend and experience what Commission Youth is all about. We'll provide the hot dogs and s'mores. You just bring yourself, a friend, and a hoodie! What to Expect: A bonfire with friends Hot dogs and s'mores Games and conversation A message centered on Jesus changing our unstable lives A relaxed, fall atmosphere Parents Students will meet outside for most of the evening, so please encourage them to dress for the weather. In the event of severe weather, activities will move indoors. Your Next Step Invite a friend and join us on October 14th for a night of community, worship, and one of our favorite moments of the fall. We can't wait to see you around the fire!

SMYM YOUTH CONVENTION 2026 DETAILSREGISTER HERE!Pay for ConventionDonate to the youth fund TLDR Youth Convention is November 20–21. Register and submit payment by November 1 to avoid the $25 late fee. First-time Convention guests attend for half price ($60). Departure is Friday at 2:00 p.m. sharp from Commission Church. Bring a signed waiver, a physical Bible, a notebook, and review the packing list before you arrive. Sign up for text updates and complete all parent checklist items before departure: register, pay, submit your waiver, and pack according to the list above. He has witnessed moments of revival within youth ministry and on the campus, but is believing for the fullness of it across North Texas. He is a campus missionary to sports teams, lunch rooms, and has helped plant Bible clubs in one of the largest high schools in America. Through his ministry, Jackson has seen unchurched students saved, baptized, and healed! Our schools are the spiritual battleground of the nation, “If we lose there, we lose everywhere else.” His desire is to train, develop, and send out youth pastors who’s hearts would be broken for the campus, so revival would invade schools in every community through the church! FAQ: Can my student invite a friend? Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. Students attending Convention for the first time receive 50% off registration, making the cost just $60. What if my family can't afford Convention? We never want finances to keep a student from encountering God. Scholarship assistance is available. Complete the Scholarship Application linked above, and we'll work with you to make sure your student can attend. When is payment due? Convention payment is due by November 1. Beginning November 2, a $25 late fee will be added. Where do we meet for departure? Meet at Commission Church on Friday, November 20. We will depart promptly at 2:00 p.m., so please arrive a few minutes early. What time will we return? We expect to return to Commission Church on Saturday, November 21, between 5:00–6:00 p.m. Parents will receive text updates if our arrival time changes. How will I receive updates while my student is away? We'll send important updates through our church texting system throughout the trip. Text "youthcon26" to 833-270-5922 to subscribe. What if my student takes medication? Please give all medications directly to Ps. Abram before departure. Include clear instructions and any equipment needed for administration. Will meals be provided? Yes. Meals are included with registration. Do parents need to sign anything? Yes. Every student must have a completed waiver before departure. Please download, complete, and bring it with you on Friday. What should my student bring for spending money? Spending money is completely optional. Students may want money for the snack shop, merchandise, or other optional purchases during the weekend. SMYM Merch is always available at the convention and is very popular with our students!

KC Day of Hope
Sign up to serve Last year, several of us helped out with the KC Day of Hope in 2025. We would love even more of us to join in the effort to bring hope to some of the people in Kansas City this coming September, on September 19th. Dozens of churches and non-profits are partnering together in collaboration with Convoy of Hope to give the residents of Kansas City a glimmer of hope in a dark world. We're going to be offering a kid zone with inflatables, a prayer tent, free haircuts and family portraits, community resources, food distribution, clothing distribution, and other activities for the Kansas City area. CAMP DAY ‘26 DETAILS Commission Church Important detailsCAMP DAY '26 SIGNUP Date: Monday, September 7, 2026 Location: Commission Church 11801 E Bannister Rd. Kansas City, MO 64138 Time: Doors Open / Check-in: 9:30am sharp Opening Ceremonies: 10:00am sharp (You really don’t want to miss this so we recommend arriving between 9:30 and 9:45am to give yourself time to find parking and get your crew checked in.) WHAT TO EXPECT 📰 A fun event for the whole family! Activities for all ages such as volleyball, rap battles, wheel of fortune, bounce houses, and a relay race - to name a few. A hotdog and hamburger lunch provided by the church - served at 11:30am. An earlier end time. Camp Day ‘26 will be wrapped by 1pm. All events will be outside if the weather permits. Arrive between 9:30am-9:45am to check in and participate in our pre-event hype games (maybe to earn extra points for your team...) COST 💰 NONE! This is a free event. TEAM COLOR 🩷💜💙💚 When you sign up to attend Camp Day ‘26 you will be assigned to a color team. So, when you sign up for Camp Day you’ll want to give us an email address that you check regularly. FAQs ❔ Q. Can I invite my friends, family, and/or neighbor? A. Absolutely! Just make sure they sign up or you sign them up so that we can plan for them. Q. What if I sign up to come but then a scheduling conflict arises and I can’t come anymore? A. Please notify Ps. Micaiah ASAP so that we can readjust our teams and our headcount for food. Q. What if I forget my water bottle at home? A. No worries! We will have some plastic water bottles and Gatorade available for you. Q. I have a pre-school age child. Will there be something for them / who would be overseeing their section of the event? A. Yes! We will have volunteers that have cleared background checks and that work in our pre-school rooms at church running that part of the event. We have an art station and well-supervised bounce houses for them to play on. Q. I don’t really want to run around, will there be something for me to do? A. Of course! We have Wheel of Fortune and other card games ready for you. Q. Will there be a dessert competition this year? A. No, there will not be. However, you can still sign up to bring a dessert to share with others - in fact - we would love that! Q. How long will the event run? A. Doors open and check-in starts at 9:30am and we will end at 1pm. Q. What if it rains? A. We will move the event inside and our games and schedule will be adjusted accordingly.

Junior Bible Quiz is Back at Commission Church!Sign up for JBQ TLDR 📖 Junior Bible Quiz (JBQ) is relaunching at Commission Church 🕘 Sundays at 9:00 AM during Discipleship Hour 👧 Open for age 4–5th Grade 📚 Kids will memorize scripture, learn Bible doctrine, and grow in biblical understanding 🗂️ Every child will receive a JBQ binder with all official JBQ questions for study at home 🏆 During the school year, teams compete one Saturday morning each month against other churches 👨‍👩‍👧 JBQ is a family discipleship tool. Growth happens both at church and at home. ❤️ Our goal is to help kids know the Bible, love Jesus, and build their lives on God’s Word 🗓️ Fall 2026 Start Date: Sunday August 9th, 2026 Junior Bible Quiz is Back at Commission Church! Psalm 119:11 says: I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. (NLT) At Commission Church, we believe children are capable of knowing God’s Word deeply, not just hearing Bible stories occasionally. That’s why we are excited to relaunch Junior Bible Quiz (JBQ) during our Sunday morning Discipleship Hour at 9 AM! This gives you an opportunity to bring your kids to church while you attend our discipleship class in the sanctuary. JBQ is designed for children ages 4 through 5th grade and is one of the most effective discipleship tools for helping kids memorize Scripture, understand biblical truths, and develop a lifelong love for the Bible. Hiding God’s Word in our hearts is one of the greatest gifts I was given as a child. From a young age, I knew God’s truth, and it formed and guided my life. JBQ is a gift to our children. We will be starting Junior Bible Quiz for the fall of 2026 on Sunday, August 9th at 9 am in the classroom What is Junior Bible Quiz? Junior Bible Quiz is a fun, engaging, and scripture-centered discipleship ministry that helps children learn and retain God’s Word through: Bible memorization Interactive questions and answers Team participation Friendly competition Foundational doctrine and theology Weekly discipleship and encouragement Kids are challenged to grow in their understanding of scripture while building confidence, friendships, and a deeper relationship with Jesus. During the school year, our JBQ teams also compete one Saturday morning each month against other churches in exciting quiz competitions. These events give kids the opportunity to work together, apply what they’ve learned, build friendships, and grow in confidence while having an incredible amount of fun. Every child participating in JBQ will receive a binder containing all of the official JBQ questions and material. This binder will serve as their primary study tool throughout the year as they memorize scripture and grow in biblical understanding. JBQ is only as successful as the families make it. While we are committed to investing in children each Sunday morning, one hour of practice, teaching, and training is not enough to truly hide the Word of God in our kids’ hearts. JBQ is a discipleship tool, and real spiritual formation happens when families intentionally engage with scripture throughout the week. As parents practice verses, review questions, and encourage consistency at home, children begin building lifelong foundations in God’s Word. We do not simply want children to attend church. We want them to know the Bible, recognize the voice of God, and build their lives on truth. In a world constantly trying to shape our children, we believe we must actively work to form them through the Word of God.
